More than two weeks ago, then-Collierville Fire Chief John Selberg was placed on administrative leave, and rumors about why ran rampant. 

“Communities thrive on open, civic dialogue, but our leaders also deserve fairness, basic decency, and residents who debate policy instead of tearing down character.”

Collierville reached a retirement deal with the fire chief after a week of negotiations. “I’m sad it got to this point,” the former fire chief said. “I never wanted shots fired (on social media).”

All Memphis-Shelby County Schools campuses will close Monday, Aug. 24, due to a destructive weekend storm. Collierville Schools delayed start times Monday, but no other suburban school systems had changed schedules. 

The Dragons — ranked first in the Daily Memphian preseason Dandy Dozen and fifth in the state in Class 6A — had planned on roaring out of the gate like the storm that pushed Saturday’s scheduled kickoff back 90 minutes.

Fire Chief John Selberg released a statement Saturday. It was the first time he’d spoken out since being placed on leave Aug. 10 and retiring Aug. 20.

Two weeks of drama in Collierville reached a conclusion with the retirement of Fire Chief John Selberg.

Collierville Fire Chief John Selberg’s retirement notice, which he submitted Thursday, came 10 days after he was placed on leave.

At least on paper, the Dragons don’t have too many weaknesses. But head coach Joe Rocconi said his job is to keep his players’ feet on the ground.

Collierville (1), Southwind (2) and Munford (3) hold down the top three positions in the Dandy Dozen rankings.

In her statement, Molly Mehner said she placed him on leave because he said, “I don’t f-ing report to Molly Mehner” in a public space in front of Collierville employees, his command staff and members of the public.

Chief John Selberg took the helm of Collierville Fire and Rescue Administration in July 2022 after retiring as the chief of neighboring suburb Germantown.
