Lawyers for three of the five former Memphis officers involved in the death of Tyre Nichols had filed motions to sever their cases, arguing they could not receive fair trials if all five face a jury together.

“Memphis will continue losing population as it has for the last three years if we do not get a handle on out-of-control crime. And our policies are moving in the wrong direction.”

Robert Clark, 58, of Travis County, Texas, is charged with nine counts of mail fraud. Clark’s indictment alleges that he began the scheme around December 2019. 

MPD reported that three suspects armed with handguns robbed an employee who was putting cash into the ATM outside the bank.

The shooting happened during a Lil Baby concert Sept. 7 and resulted in critical injuries to one man.

Monica Timmerman cannot accept new cases and must stop representing existing clients by Oct. 27. District Attorney General Steve Mulroy said Timmerman has begun treatment and expects to be in compliance before the suspension begins. 

Whitehaven Elementary and Whitehaven High schools went on a precautionary lockdown as police investigated an off-campus shooting Wednesday afternoon.

Memphis Police Department officers are looking for a suspect following a robbery of a Wells Fargo branch in East Memphis.

The judge determined that Kelsey had raised a “substantial and close question that is integral to the merits of his convictions” and did not appeal for the sole purpose of delay.

Sgt. Louis Brownlee, a public information officer with MPD, said no foul play is suspected. 

“For our office to bring criminal charges, we must be confident that we can prove an actual violation of a criminal statute beyond a reasonable doubt,” Mulroy said. “We don’t have sufficient evidence to do that here.”

The alleged victim, Elvis Hester, filed a grievance against Jones after Jones reportedly made threats of a sexual nature and refused to feed Hester.

With four weeks left until he’s scheduled to go to prison, former state Sen. Brian Kelsey appeared in federal court in Nashville on Thursday, Sept. 21 to argue that prosecutors violated his plea deal — and that he should remain free while the appeal plays out.

The five are defendants in both the criminal and civil cases.

“That video should not have been released,” Bonner said in an interview on the WKNO-TV program “Behind The Headlines.”

The suspect has not yet been identified or charged.

The 12th annual Memphis Walk a Mile in Her Shoes brought students, athletes, police officials, government employees and community members, some in high heels, to raise awareness.

“The goal is always (to) call if you can, text if you can’t ...” said the director of the DeSoto County Emergency Communications District. “Sometimes that’s not an option, and when it isn’t, now they have a way to talk to 911.” 

Lifeline to Success, the nonprofit, will put the funds toward its new rehabilitation center, Welch Home for Success, and a 12-month demonstration program.
