Because of delays, the Memphis-Shelby County Schools board members said at a retreat Thursday that the search for a new superintendent will not be complete by Aug.7, when the new school year begins.
There was no property tax increase in a DeSoto County Schools budget presentation to its Board of Education Thursday.
In recent weeks, the search for a new Memphis-Shelby County Schools superintendent has fallen apart, and the board will discuss next steps at a Thursday, June 1, retreat.
Germantown Middle’s principal will go back to Collierville’s school district, where she previously taught sixth grade.
Five activists are currently banned from attending Memphis-Shelby County Schools board meetings; the school district says it is trying to set up a meeting with the activists to come to some sort of resolution.
Board members were to vote to rebid the current cleaning contract and award it to four vendors instead of one, or bring cleaning services in house. They didn’t.
“I always use an analogy when people say this is not a ‘real college.' If your air conditioning unit stops working in the middle of the summer, are you going to call someone with a doctorate degree or are you going to call someone with an HVAC license?”
The current board attorney reports to the district’s interim superintendent who is a finalist for the permanent position. Because of that, some have questioned if the board needs independent representation while it searches for a new superintendent.
The Arlington school board will meet in a rare Saturday session to consider rescinding their increases approved after a week of testy communication between members.
“We hear a lot of people say our Frayser community is important,” said Trezevant student Trinity Watson. “Now show it to us.”
“It’s very evident these leaders don’t come into these roles for the salaries. It’s truly to make an impact for our children, ” said Collierville Schools board member Keri Blair.
TCAP test results shows nearly 80% of the Germantown school district’s third graders scored proficiently on the English language arts portion. Tennessee Department of Education released district-level data Wednesday.
“If I could give advice to anyone struggling in college, it’s to ask for help when you need it,” said Memphian Hannah Fields, who recently graduated valedictorian of her senior class at Stillman College. “You can’t do everything yourself; nobody can do everything alone all the time.”

Under state law, third graders who score less than proficient on the TCAP are at risk of retention; some local suburban districts revealed between 7.3% and 12% of their students may need to retake the test.
“Under the proposed budget, each of the board members’ annual financial compensation could move from the current $6,495 to $12,000 a year. And that current amount already is more than any other suburban district.”

The Arlington Community Schools board will consider its annual fiscal year budget Tuesday evening, and included in the numbers is a significant increase to board members’ salaries.
“Many of us know that training for these high-wage, high-demand careers are needed right now, and the demand will simply just continue to grow in the future,” said Michael Heindl, president of NWCC since 2018.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools began releasing state-mandated test scores to students and families Monday, in a year when the district estimates that 41% of third graders would be at risk for retention.
The project trains selected students, known as ambassadors, in the areas of resilience, relationship building, conflict resolution, nonviolent responses, social-emotional learning and workplace readiness.
Memphis “has its unique challenges, but it also has a unique future because of the leaders that are being created today in this stadium,” the governor said in his commencement address.
Arlington’s Board of Education chairman responded to remarks made by one of Germantown’s school board members in light of bumping custodial pay. Arlington and Germantown use the same custodial provider.
“I’m a little irritated that Arlington is just apparently throwing money around and we’re having to react,” GMSD board member Brian Curry said. “I’m not real happy about that.”
Those banned, plus other community activists, gathered in front of the MSCS school board Thursday to protest and call on the board to answer their questions and meet their demands.
