Dr. Jason Vanatta of Methodist Transplant Institute was 13 when he found his calling in 1984, when a child made headlines after she received the world’s first heart-liver transplant at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Jason Vanatta has been named program director of the Methodist Transplant Institute in Memphis, which is known for broad success with liver, kidney and pancreas transplants.

BlueCross members will lose access to Methodist hospitals unless an agreement is reached by Sunday, Jan. 1.
Billions of dollars in expansions and renovations are planned for several local hospitals in 2023.
BlueCross says Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare charges significantly higher rates than other facilities in the Memphis area, and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital charges the highest rates of any children’s hospital in the state.
Methodist said some care providers voiced questions about patients receiving gender-affirming procedures at a facility affiliated with the hospital, prompting the pause to review practices. It did not say how long the pause would last.
